Electrical Stimulation

Electrical Stimulation Therapy

Electrical stimulation is a form of physical therapy used to heal tissue damage and promote neuromuscular health. In the field of chiropractic care, electrical stimulation can be applied to a range of issues, from muscle atrophy to injury rehabilitation. Here is what you need to know about this therapeutic technique and how it is applied at Arlington Wellness Chiropractic Center in Texas.

.

What Is Electrical Stimulation?

Electrical muscle stimulation, also known as EMS or electromyostimulation, is the application of electric impulses to elicit muscle contraction. The body's central nervous system requires electricity in order to perform actions. In this form of therapy, electrical impulses are able to promote action within the central nervous system, allowing for healing or optimization to take place.

How Electrical Stimulation Is Used

This form of stimulation can be used both as a tool for rehabilitation or prevention of future health issues. In physical rehabilitation, electrical stimulation therapy may be used to treat muscle atrophy, neuromuscular imbalance, musculoskeletal injuries, or tissue damage to the muscles and joints of the body. If you have cancer or a disease that causes muscle weakness or a decrease in mass, electrical muscular stimulation is a potential treatment option for you.

In chiropractic settings, electrical stimulation has been practiced for relaxation, blood flow promotion, muscular stimulation, and increased mobility.

Types of Electrical Stimulation

The two main categories of this therapy are electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). In both versions, electrodes are placed on the patient in order to send electrical signals through the body. In the case of TENS, the signals are moved through nerve fibers, especially to the brain. In EMS, the electrodes will trigger targeted muscle contractions that are beneficial to the body. There are other types of stimulation that are less common, such as ESTR for tissue repair or spinal cord stimulation for back pain and dysfunction.
